These families exposed themselves to the hazardous environment of heat, fumes, dust, stench, flies and mosquitoes for decades to earn their living collecting wood and burning them into charcoal. The 15-year-old charcoal-making industry produces 6,000 sacks of charcoal monthly. Charcoal makers earn an average of 140 dollars (109 euros) per month.
