Can you tell a difference between these two cars?
If you can’t, the answer is one is an authentic Lamborghini, the other is a handmade replica created by this man - Wang Jian. He’s become a bit of an Internet sensation; some are even calling him a hero.
The 28-year-old hails from a rural area of China's eastern Jiangsu province. He didn’t have much growing up, but he did have a love for cars - fast cars. At 16, he was already training to become a mechanic.
[Wang Jian, Mechanic]:
"I've always loved sports cars since I was a child. After growing up, I thought of making my own, when I had the circumstances in life and the knowledge. In order to realize this dream, I struggled to learn about this. When I had the right circumstances and the time, I assembled it myself and realized my dream."
Like Wang, this car had humble beginnings; the parts came from an old Nissan van and Volkswagen sedan. It’s modeled after the incredibly rare Lamborghini Reventon. Only 21 were made. And while it would fetch around $1.6 million in the US, Wang built his for only $9,500.
[Xu Lingxiang, Neighbor]:
"I used to watch him assembling this Lamborghini all day, every day. At first, I couldn't figure out what he was doing. I could only see the frame and structure. Then he bought a lot of iron sheets back, and started cutting and drawing on them. I couldn't tell. I didn't know it was a Lamborghini replica until it was finally all finished. After seeing the finished product, I think it's extremely similar to the original."
Wang’s labor of love started in May of last year. Although authorities have told him to keep it off the road due to safety concerns, Wang has big ambitions.
[Wang Jian, Mechanic]:
"If circumstances in the future permit, I want to make a sports car myself, including designing and researching it all by myself - a sports car which has a superior performance in every way."
So while it has only been used so far to transport fertilizer, the car is already on the open road of dreams.
