The cigar, once it is officially accepted by Guinness World Records in London, will eclipse the previous record cigar of 148 feet 9 inches (45.38 metres), both rolled by Jose Castelar Cairo, better known as "Cueto".

clear view of deep canyons

A photo released on the Nasa Earth Observatory internet site and acquired on March 29, 2011 shows the Northwest Greenland Canyons. On March 29, sunny weather allowed scientists a clear view of deep canyons, or fjords, along the coast of northwestern Greenland. Thin, rocky ridges between the fjords cast their shadows nearly sideways, thanks to low-angled sunlight. Ice rests on the sea surface, and icebergs near the shore poke above the smooth sea ice. The area shown lies in the same region where the Petermann Glacier calved in the summer of 2010. The acquisition of this photograph came right after a key milestone in the IceBridge mission. Launched in March 2009, NASA’s IceBridge mission is the world’s largest airborne survey of polar ice. The mission is aimed at filling the gap between the end of the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat), and the launch of ICESAT-2 (planned for 2015). In the spring of 2011, IceBridge pilots were busy over Greenland, Alaska, and the Arctic Ocean.
A farmer turns the soil

A farmer turns the soil in his fenced-off field on the outskirts of the town of Zhucheng in Shandong province April 20, 2011. The fertile fields of Shandong Province in eastern China are an unlikely microcosm of the national economy. There is not a power plant or factory in sight, yet the area encapsulates as well as any industrial city some of the forces that are reshaping the country. People grumble about rising prices, adding weight to the authorities' concern that inflation could spark unrest. The virtual absence of any farmers under 40 speaks to China's urbanization, with youngsters decamping as soon as they can to work in towns near and far, leaving their aging parents to till the soil. With the rural labor pool shrinking, wages are rising. China's vast rural economy, home to over 700 million people, seems to be doing well. But urban China is doing much better, and the resulting inequality is a nagging concern for the ruling Communist Party.
