NASA's Deputy Administrator Shana Dale (R) and NASA research scientist Dr. William Saturno investigate the San Bartolo Maya archaeological site in Peten, Guatemala December 11, 2007. NASA's remote sensing data were used to locate and interpret the remains of the ancient Maya civilization.
These three NASA handout images show the Peten region of Guatemala, where NASA has used remote sensing data to locate and interpret the remains of the ancient Maya Civilization. The top image was made from a helicopter 11 December, 2007 just above the archaeological site and illustrates how dense the foliage is. The image in the center was created by NASA scientists using Ikonos satellite data, used to help locate the ancient Maya sites. The image on the bottom shows an overlay of structures found using the remote sensing data.
