

The eastern face of New Zealand's snow-capped Mount Ruapehu volcano is seen coated black with mud and ash Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007 after a sudden eruption last night spewed mud down its slopes and flying rock seriously injured one climber. The volcano erupted Tuesday evening, and airplane pilots reported seeing a cloud of ash and steam about 4 kilometers (15,000 feet) above its peak.
