Philippine President Gloria Arroyo convened a food summit north of Manila on April 4 with top officials and farm experts to help the country cope with soaring rice prices. Amid growing concern about unrest over the steep hikes in the cost of the country's diet staple, Arroyo is looking for ways to ensure food supplies for the Philippines, one of the world's top importers of rice.

Authorities have deployed police to crackdown on rice hoarders and military troops to assist in rice distribution. Warehouse owners and traders in the Philippines found to be hoarding rice will be charged with "economic sabotage" which carries a life sentence, officials said on April 3.
