The normally popular lake was closed due to warming weather on the sixth day of the new lunar year sparked by concerns of ice thickness and capacity to handle holiday crowds, enjoying the last day of the weeklong Spring Festival holidays with warnings of the closure sent via SMS to Beijing's mobile phone subscribers. Beijing, host city for the 2008 Olympics in August, experienced its best run of clear days in January since 2000, which the city's Environmental Protection Administration said was due to persisitent cold air, with updrafts and northerly winds helping disperse pollutants, as well as the closure of up to ten heavily-polluting industrial fiacilities in or around the capital. The Olympic host city this year aims to have at least 256 "blue sky" days.
