The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says it will not meet its Jan. 9, 2008 deadline for a decision on whether to list the polar bear as a threatened species. The agency says it hopes to provide a final recommendation to Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne within the next month.

Polar bear 'Vera' chases a bird away from the food in front of her cave at the 'Tiergarten Nuernberg' zoo in Nuremberg, southern Germany, on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008. According to the zoo's director Dag Enke, 'Vera' gave birth to at least one cub in mid December whilst another polar bear 'Vilma' already gave birth to at least two cubs at the end of November 2007. The fate of their offspring remains unknown as the animals' keepers have been keen not to disturb the cubs since they were born. At the moment, zoo officials do not even know for certain how many cubs were born. According to officials at Nuremburg Zoo, one of the bears gave birth a five weeks ago and other three weeks ago, and the cubs are now hidden deep in caves built in the bear enclosure. In order not to disturb them, no attempts were made to enter the caves and no cameras were installed. "Polar bears are very sensitive and normally reject the cubs as soon as they are disturbed," said Dr. Helmut Magdefrau, the deputy head of Nuremberg Zoo on Friday.
