A general view shows Al-Ukhaidar Fortress built in the desert, 60 kms northwest of the shrine city of Karbala, 06 December 2007. Located on the routes of the ancient trade caravans converge, Al-Ukhaidar is a defensive fortress with distinctive military features dating from the Middle Ages. It was built in the early period of the Abbassid dynasty, in the reign of the caliph al-Mansur Billaah.
