Mezen, population 4,000........Mezen in Russia's

laundry hangs 21 November 2007 on a clothesline at the village of Mezen in Russia's remote north. To get to Mezen, population 4,000, means crossing bridge-less rivers or flying from the regional capital Arkhangelsk on a clapped-out, bi-prop. The airport consists of a rickety wooden control tower and a runway marked off with pine tree branches. Historically this remoteness has given the people of Mezen an independent spirit.
