The Parasail Safety Council, which tracks injuries and deaths from the activity nationwide, reports more than 70 people have been killed and at least 1,600 injured between 1982 and 2012, out of an estimated 150 million parasail rides during those 30 years. Despite the inherent risk, few federal or state safety regulations exist for parasailing. In Florida, which has by far the largest number of parasail operators at about 120, repeated efforts to enact new rules following fatal accidents have landed with a thud. Florida is seen by safety proponents as a national bellwether because of parasailing's popularity in the state.

This handout picture, released from Kyoto University on October 5, 2012 shows a mouse (R) which was born from an egg cell, made from indiced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells of a mouse, and this mouse's offspring. Japanese stem cell researchers announced they had created viable eggs using normal cells from an adult body on October 5. A team at Kyoto University harvested stem cells from mice and altered a number of genes to create cells very similar to the primordial germ cells that generate sperm in men and oocytes or eggs in women. They then nurtured these with cells that would become ovaries and transplanted the mixture into living mice, where the cells matured into fully-grown oocytes.

JAPAN-SPACE-SCIENCE-SATELLITE
This computer graphic (CG) image, released by Fukuoka Institute of Technology and and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) on October 5, 2012 shows a Morse code in the night sky, which is transmitted by a palm sized satellite, developed by Japan's Fukuoka Institute of Technology professor Takushi Tanaka. The 10cm cubic satellite, which has LED lights on surfaces, was launched from the International Space Station (ISS) on October 5, 2012. The satellite in orbit around Earth will flash a Morse code message that will be visible around the world next month. Mission commanders hope the satellite will become the first orbiter to transmit an LED message across the night sky.

For millions of people, that's the takeaway from a once-in-a-lifetime experience. But every year there are accidents, some of them fatal. The Parasail Safety Council, which tracks injuries and deaths from the activity nationwide, reports more than 70 people have been killed and at least 1,600 injured between 1982 and 2012, out of an estimated 150 million parasail rides during those 30 years. Despite the inherent risk, few federal or state safety regulations exist for parasailing. In Florida, which has by far the largest number of parasail operators at about 120, repeated efforts to enact new rules following fatal accidents have landed with a thud. Florida is seen by safety proponents as a national bellwether because of parasailing's popularity in the state.
