An Indian artist belonging to the Vishwakarma community works on a part of a Nadaswaram musical instrument at his small workshop in Narasingapettai village, 320 kms from Chennai, India, 28 March 2011. Nadaswaram, one of the most popular classical instruments of Tamilnadu state, is a wind instrument similar to the North Indian Shehnai but larger, with a hardwood body and a large flaring bell made of wood or metal. The Nadaswaram instrument, which contains three parts namely Kuzhal, Thimiru, and Anasu, is made of a tree called Aacha. In Tamilnadu, only four families living in Narasingapettai village of Tanjore district know the art of making Nadaswarams which they learnt from their forefathers. They spend nearly six days to make a Nadaswaram instrument and sell it all over india for about 55 USD per equipment for their livelihood. They recently started exporting to Switzerland, Canada and France, amongst others.
